About Ben, Sam, Deb Thoen
Hi! We are (from left to right) Sam, Deb and Ben Thoen. Between us, we have been helping people build confidence and self-esteem through fitness for over 25 years. Each of us has individually embarked on our own fitness journey at one point, and as a team, our mission is to lead others along their way to theirs.
Sam: I’ll be the first to admit that like many, my fitness journey stated out of vanity… and part ridiculousness. I’m not afraid to admit that I was 16 years old, sitting in a movie theater watching Twilight when I noticed that all of the women in the theater were getting worked up every time the shirtless stud with washboard abs came on the screen. The next day was the first time I used my gym membership. I had no idea that was the day I was starting in on what would grow to become my passion, and ultimately my career. When starting out I was just like everybody else meaning I had no idea what I was doing. The only thing I did know was that the days I exercised were good days and the days I did not, weren’t. This is where I started to understand the power of fitness and the incredible effect it can have on self-esteem and general happiness.
Deb: I have been working in the health & fitness industry in Spokane for 30 years, the first 15 of which I worked as a registered nurse and saw the negative outcomes of people making poor health and lifestyle choices. Eventually, I decided to switch gears and focus on the prevention of health problems. For the past 16 years I have worked as a personal trainer and found my passion for small group training.
Like you, I’ve been a member of your standard, free-for-all style gym, spending time training, but not seeing the physical changes I desired. Upon being introduced to bodyweight work, resistance training, and high intensity cardiovascular workouts,I finally saw results. I’ve been implementing these with my clients over the last 3 years and have seen outstanding results in 30-45 minute sessions.
Ben: Hi! My name is Ben. I have had a passion for customer service and helping others my entire life, and I love being fit and healthy. I want everyone I meet to experience the feeling of confidence they will get from being physically fit, but more importantly, I want people in my city that I’m proud to call home be able to live long, happy lives with the ones they love. I am a HUGE believer in doing everything I can to help people break through limitations they have on their lives. It’s my mission to turn all your “I can’t”s in to “I will”s, and eventually “I’m proud I did”s.
My fitness journey began as I finished up high school when. I was 18 years old, and while my twin brother had been lifting weights and getting pumped for two years already, I was in college now, and was still a long, skinny string bean. I was active, and had just finished growing, but I had NO idea what the difference was between a carb and a calorie, and was more or less lost on my own in a big box gym. Unlike others, I was fortunate enough to have a brother who was patient with and willing to coach me up on proper lifting technique.
At first, I hated how time consuming working out was. Once I started seeing results however, I fell in love with it, and pretty soon it became part of my lifestyle. I still continued with my, unknowingly, unhealthy diet, but I had two things going for me: I was physically fit and I still had my young metabolism.
As I started college, I quickly realized that all my hard work was going to be for not if I didn’t start eating better. Again, I was pretty fortunate in that I have been personal/small group training for over 15 years, and is a registered nurse, and was able to pass along her wealth of knowledge regarding nutrition to me. It certainly didn’t happen overnight, but I eventually made proper nutrition a staple of my diet and I now really notice the difference in how I feel when I eat clean compared to when I don’t!
I love that I’ve been able to combine two things I am passionate about in fitness and customer service to brink my skillset to our Fit Body Family as a small group trainer and business manager. I strongly believe in doing whatever it takes to make our members happy, and always have your best interest at heart! And I SO look forward to helping the Spokane Valley community get fit!
After helping our North Spokane community achieve some awesome goals and completely renovate lifestyles, we have decided it is time to expand our Fit Body Family to Spokane Valley. One thing that we like to make very clear is we are not just trainers here to help people exercise. We are coaches, here to educate. Our goal is to make sure that you, as part of our Fit Body Family, understand how to take back control of your body. We teach this through a number of fitness components, including proper nutrition and exercise technique. We pride ourselves on the fact that our studio caters to all levels of fitness from total beginners, to elite athletes. We are here to motivate and push to get the most out of each time you see us. We, as a family, are so grateful to be able to help others achieve their fitness goals and cannot wait to watch our family grow here in Spokane Valley.
